Early Europeans called Tūī the parson bird due to the white tuft at its throat, however now the Māori name is solely used. Tūī feed mainly on nectar from native flowering plants. Tūī are known for their noisy call which combines bellbird-like notes with clicks, cackles, creaks and groans.
